Have you ever noticed that scoring in competition often follows a pattern? The pattern is that scoring is really good initially, then goes down in the middle or 2/3 through the way of competition, then rises at the end. This pattern is no surprise when you think about human nutrition and how it affects scoring.
Presuming you eat a decent breakfast, your body starts to utilize the vitamins and minerals from breakfast, as well as reserves from the night before for the morning. The result, is pretty good scoring. But then at some point between a snack and lunch, competitors have a tendency to shovel garbage (nutrition wise) into their body because of convenience. Sugar, refined carbohydrates, granola bars and soda will cause your scoring to go down. Why? Because poor nutritional choices have a direct result in performance. If the same shooter ate a healthy snack or meal midway through shooting, that shooter’s body will respond with healthy performance. In general, sugar, carbs and the like will result in the body generating an insulin response that will not make you feel very good and will cause you to “crash.” That is what is affecting your shooting performance.
Supplements and good nutritional choices are how you get an advantage over your competitor. Supplements are simply vitamins and minerals that your body needs to perform at its peak. It is what the body wants from your diet and food. Unfortunately, our diets (food) don’t always contain all the amazing vitamins and minerals that the body needs to perform. For example, specific vitamins are directly related to things like eyesight, concentration, brain function and muscle response. If your diet doesn’t have the specific vitamins for these functions, then your body won’t do them very well. Supplements, give your body what is missing from your diet and allows the body to have the fuel it needs to perform functions and perform them as good as possible.
When you make sure you give your body healthy food, and supplement that food with the right supplements, then your body becomes its own finely tuned machine that can work at peak performance. If you do this, you will notice your scores increase, and you will start to realize that you don’t have any decreases in scoring mid way through because you have ensured your body isn’t going to “crash” on you.
